What is your motive…?

The motive behind your gift
Is more important than your gift

Why do we do what we do?

“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels,
but have not love,
I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.
And though I have the gift of prophecy,
and understand all mysteries and all knowledge,
and though I have all faith,
so that I could remove mountains,
but have not love,
I am nothing.
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor,
and though I give my body to be burned,
but have not love,
it profits me nothing.”
(1 Corinthians 13:1 – 3)

Though I speak…
Though I have…
Though I bestow…
Though I give…

Are all attributes that we DO possess
As a spirit filled Christian

So how can this go on to say:
“But have NOT love…”

We KNOW that God IS love
(1 John 4:8)
So the Christian HAS God within
And therefore MUST have love also

I believe the answer is in the words:
I have become…
I am nothing…
It profits me nothing…

These talk of a gradual progression
So put together
They read like this

Though I speak… I have become
Though I have… I am nothing
Though I bestow & give… It profits me nothing

The gifts and the calling of God
Are without repentence
(Romans 11:29)
What God has given
He will NEVER take away

However, we may not always be pure in heart
We can stray from being God centred
To become more self centred
And THIS is the problem

We DO have love
Because we DO have God
After all, we ARE Christian

But we may NOT have Love’s MOTIVE
We may NOT have God’s MOTIVE
Which is LOVE, Godly LOVE, agape

Our MOTIVE may be selfish
And THAT is NOT love

So when you come to God
Don’t just come to escape Hell
Come with your whole heart
Sold out for Him
Spirit, soul and body
(1 Thessalonians 5:23)
