We spend so much time talking about sin
About “pleading the blood”
About different types of sin
But do we truly understand what sin is?
I think the problem is that we are actually talking about the “fruit” of sin
Rather than considering the “root” of sin
Lying, swearing, sexual immorality, stealing, murder etc.
Are the “fruit” of sin
These are what sin is for so many people
Romans 3:23 tells us that we have all sinned and fallen short…
To “sin”, is to “miss the mark”
But WHAT is the MARK?
What is it that we are MISSING?
When Adam and Eve ate of the fruit in the garden
We focus on the fruit – as being the sin
But I believe that their “sin” was not WHAT they ate
But rather it was THAT they ate
2 Timothy 3:12 gives us a clue towards the answer
We are called to “live godly”
And as a result
Will “suffer persecution”
Adam and Eve “lived godly” in the garden
UNTIL they chose to eat of the fruit of the tree
THEN they were “living selfishly”
Which is SIN
So the “root” of the problem is simple
To “sin” is to live selfishly, pridefully
Or mindful of “Me, Myself and I”
On the other hand
When we choose to live godly
We have “no more consciousness of sin”
(Hebrews 10:2)
