And I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise, my soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine
The above four lines are part of
The lyrics of “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)”
As a Christian these words are really
Encouraging when you realise they are
Talking about the relationship between
A Christian and Jesus Christ
What a comfort it is to know…
That “I am Yours and You are mine”
My life belongs to Jesus
Which is wonderful
But even greater than that
He is mine – my Saviour and my Lord
All of which is fantastic
And it is
But…
All that I have said comes from
The body of the four lines of lyrics
Which is how we normally read things
What most of us do, quite regularly
Is skip over the first few words
“And I will call upon Your name”
And run them into the verse as a whole
We see the end result, so to speak
“For I am Yours and You are mine”
And feel wonderful
Or go “Ahh – isn’t that nice”
But miss the start, the beginning
“And I will call upon Your name”
Are we those who “CALL upon His name?”
Or simply coast along trusting in His promise
“To never leave us nor forsake us”
(Hebrews 13:5 & Matthew 28:20)
You see, ACTION is required on our part
Not onerous hard work
Simply choosing to CALL on His name
I WILL call – my choice
This requires humility
Being dependant NOT independent
Looking to Him NOT self-sufficient
Not simply calling Him Saviour
But my Lord too
With this attitude in mind
The four lines make sense
Perfect sense
