Matthew 8

“And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings,
that the people were astonished at His teaching,
for He taught them as one having authority,
and not as the scribes.”
(Matthew 7:28 – 29)

The three previous chapters
End with this statement by Matthew

“the people were astonished at His teaching”

Matthew uses the term “people”
Rather than “Disciples”

So it is safe to assume that Jesus
Was speaking to the multitudes
Referred to in Matthew 4:25
And Matthew 5:1

“When He had come down from the mountain,
great multitudes followed Him.”
(Matthew 8:1)

And they all followed Him
And Jesus cleansed a leper – Matthew 8:2 – 4
Heals a Centurion’s servant – Matthew 8:5 – 13
Heals Peter’s mother-in-law – Matthew 8:14 – 15
And many others – Matthew 8:16 – 17

And then this happens:
“The Cost of Discipleship”
Matthew 8:18 – 22

A multitude is many people
And some of the multitude were Disciples
For a “Disciple” is simply a Follower

It is later, in Matthew 10
When Matthew names the twelve Disciples
The special ones, that we identify with

But there were more than 12 that followed Jesus
In these verses (18 – 22)
We begin to see and hear about the cost
Of being a Disciple of Jesus

NOW would be a good time
And consider for yourself
The Cost of Being a Disciple of Jesus

Do you consider yourself as a Disciple?
I presume you are a Christian, reading this?

The previous Devotional on Matthew 5 to 7
Started with the Beatitudes
Which give us a sense of “BEing”
Rather than a sense of “DOing”

They are the BEatitudes
NOT the DOatitudes

Now I know this is a play on words
But are you more concerned with “Doing” for Jesus?
Or “Being” for Jesus?

You see a Disciple is someone who
Follows and obeys the one they are following

And Jesus does not require us to DO anything
Other than BELIEVE Him

Believe that He has already DONE everything
Believe that He is the only Saviour of the world
Believe that He is your Saviour
Believe that He is the Lamb of God
Who HAS taken away all your sin
He PAID for it on the cross

You do not have to pay anything for your sin
Jesus DID

You do not have to DO anything to please God
He already LOVES you unconditionally

You do not have to DO anything for Him
Other than believe…
And RECEIVE all that He has to give you

“For God so loved the world that He GAVE…”
(John 3:16)

And in believing and receiving Jesus
We BEcome children of God
(John 1:12)

We ARE human BEings
Not human DOings

When we believe and receive
We are receiving Him
And He lives in us and through us

As we “BE” who we are
His love, His life (eternal)
Shines out of our lives

And in that way
We BEcome a witness
A witness of Him
