The Gospel according to Mark
This all started due to a sermon
That I preached on
24th January 2021
I set a challenge to people
To read the four Gospels
And I wonder…
How are you getting on…?
It’s taken me almost 6 months
To write about Matthew
And only now starting to do
The same with Mark
On reading the first few verses
Of Mark chapter 1
You will see or should see
An obvious difference between
Matthew and Mark
Mark starts by telling the story
Of John the Baptist
No frills here…
Just get to the point
Say it how it is
No preamble about the
Birth of Jesus
“We just want to hear
About His ministry…”
This is why I say so often
That you have to read the Bible
In context…
And do not read verses or passages
In isolation…
God uses people to speak through
The Holy Spirit inspired different
Men to write the Bible…
People with different personalities…
Matthew paid attention to the detail
Mark seems to be getting
Straight to the point
And yet it is ALL scripture
It ALL flows together
And complements itself
And so in this first chapter of Mark
Jesus is baptised by John…
Tempted by Satan…
Started preaching the Gospel:
“Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
(Mark 1:15)
Called four fishermen…
Cast out an unclean spirit…
Healed Peter’s mother-in-law…
Healed many after Sabbath sunset…
Cleansed a leper…
All in the space of 45 verses
