John 14 verses 4 to 6

I have already considered verses 4 and 5
But in order to adequately consider verse 6
Let’s put it in context:
“And where I go you know, and the way you know.”
Thomas said to Him,
“Lord, we do not know where You are going,
and how can we know the way?”
Jesus said to him, “I am the way,
the truth, and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
(John 14:4 – 6)

Jesus has told the Disciples that they know
Where He is going and the way to get there

Thomas has spoken up and disagreed with Jesus
There is no reaction from the other Disciples
Could he be saying what they all were thinking…?

Notice in verse 6 that Jesus responded to Thomas
He spoke to THOMAS
He wasn’t speaking to all the Disciples
As Thomas had asked the question:
“How can we know the way?”

This question that Thomas asks
Implies that he was speaking for all the Disciples
As he said – how can WE know the way
NOT – how can I know the way

Again, we need to pay attention to what is written

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way,
the truth, and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
(John 14:6)

So Jesus tells Thomas this well known answer
Which He starts with “I am”
Exodus 3:14
When God appeared to Moses
At the burning bush

Those two words, three letters
Are the most powerful and meaningful in the Bible
For as we have already seen in this chapter
Jesus identifies Himself as being God

So we could read what Jesus said like this:
God is the Way
God is the Truth
God is the Life

And I use capital letters on purpose
To denote that they are godly attributes

We are not to follow any old way, but The Way
There ONLY is ONE Way
And His name is Jesus

Come, follow me
Is what He said to His Disciples
And He still does, today

The Truth is the Bible, the Word of God
John 1 talks about the Word being with God
And in verse 14 the Word became flesh
Jesus IS the Word, the Bible and He IS Truth

And Jesus is Life, eternal Life
That is IN all who believe and trust in Him
As their own personal Saviour and Lord

Not just when we die and go to heaven
But right now, right here, in this life
And forever…

And finally:
“No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Since Jesus said, “I am”
He identified Himself as being God

Jesus IS God
The Father He prayed to IS God in heaven
To get to the Father
You MUST come through the Son, Jesus

We may not like this, as it is exclusive
Jesus is NOT A way to the Father
But the ONLY way
Thankfully He said it
And I believe it
