Fellowship – 1 John 1

It is truly wonderful that we can have “Fellowship”
Fellowship with God…

But that “Fellowship” starts with John
And the original Disciples:
“that you also may have fellowship with us”
(1 John 1:3)

How can this be…?
Surely this can ONLY be applied to the people this was written to
To the people who were ALIVE at that time…?
When this was first written

If that were the case
(Which it most definitely – is not!)
Then scripture would only be relevant to the ones who first read it
And we ALL know that scripture is for everyone
For everyone who will believe

The rest of that verse says this:
“and truly our fellowship is with the Father
and with His Son Jesus Christ.”
(1 John 1:3)

We do not question our ability
To have “Fellowship” with God
So by inference we have fellowship with ALL believers
Past and present and indeed future

John goes on and says:
“If we say that we have fellowship with Him,
and walk in darkness,
we lie and do not practice the truth”
(1 John 1:6)

But immediately before this verse
It says this:
“God is light and in Him is no darkness at all”
(1 John 1:5)

John, I think, is referring to the incident
That he was present at on the Mount of Transfiguration
He was there when Jesus “shone” with the glory of God
And IN Him was “no darkness at all”

This is the One
That we have “Fellowship” with

Clearly it is to be understood
That we do not simply “visit”
With One like this

We can “Fellowship” with the Father
And with the Son, Jesus Christ
Because as Paul says:
“We are NEW creations”
(2 Corinthians 5:17)

Since, then, we have fellowship
With the One who has No darkness
With the One who IS light
We can no longer continue to walk in darkness
By choice…

For if we do…
We lie…
And do not practice the truth
(1 John 1:6)

A stirring thought surely
God indeed is for us and not against us
He loves us – completely
He knew we were coming
Before we were in our mother’s womb
And absolutely loves us
We are called according to His purpose

So as we respond in faith to His grace
We have fellowship with Him
And walk in the light as He IS in the light

“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light,
we have fellowship with one another”
(1 John 1:7)

And so we get to the hard part…
We get to the telling part…

So often we can spiritualise our walk with God
Get lost in His love for us
Go and dwell with Him
Spend time with Him
Lost in “our own wee world of love”
With God, our Father – Daddy
With Jesus, our Saviour and Lord

And yet “hate” our brother
Whom we can see…
(Which John goes on to talk about later)

TRUE fellowship with God
Changes us

God does love us
And when we believe and receive
Him and that love
We begin to love Him back

And that love, who He truly is
Changes us

That is why we question so much and so often
No change – are you sure…?
By their fruit – you shall know them…

Let us examine ourselves
Let us decide to truly believe
And fellowship with Him
Who is in the light

Let His light and His love
Change us
And have fellowship with everyone
“and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son
cleanses us from all sin”
(1 John 1:7)
