Abba, Daddy, Papa…

In June 1995 I was in Jerusalem on a Sabbath
I happened to be a short distance from the crowd of people below me
Standing at the Western Wall, the Wailing Wall – praying

The people were well dressed, for the occasion
And a number of families stood out as they were all dressed alike

While I stood there I heard, what turned out to be a young boy, cry out “Abba”
He actually was crying, “Abba, Abba, Abba”
Clearly in a distressed tone.
When I looked from my vantage point, I could see him
Amongst the crowd but clearly alone, as he wore different clothes from those around him

As I watched and looked I observed his father
Dressed like him and walking towards the sound of his son
When the boy caught sight of his father
He ran towards him shouting in joy, “Abba, Abba, Abba”
And leaped into his father’s arms
Where they hugged and kissed each other.

How do we refer to our fathers?
Daddy or Papa?

How do we refer to our Heavenly Father?
Abba, Our loving Heavenly Father, Our Father, My Father, Daddy, Papa?
Some of us struggle to call Almighty God “DADDY”
And yet that is who He IS

I was talking with someone recently who shared their personal challenge to call God, “Daddy”
But over time with love and help
God urged them to say, “Daddy, Daddy, Daddy”
At first the word “Daddy” was slow and a whisper
Almost strangled
But as they were obedient and trusted Him
The word began to flow
And as it flowed, God by His Grace softened their heart and healed them
To the place where they were saying, “Daddy, Daddy, Daddy”
With vigour and joy and love and sincerity

This morning as I was taking a shower
I started to say, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus”
(Let’s say that “Things” had not run particularly smoothly at the beginning of the day)
I needed help
And I was calling out for help
And as I spoke, the tears flowed
And healing came through His love for me
His acceptance and encouragement

I had been trying to live life on yesterday’s bread
Caught up in the busyness of life
And choosing to live carnally not spiritually
So easy to do and so many of us do it

We KNOW who we are – in Christ
We are CERTAIN of our position in Him and He in us
Yet we forget to, “Seek first…”
Or say, “I’ll do it later…”

And He STILL loves us
And we are still brand spanking NEW in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17 – 18a)
But our Daily Bread is meant for each day
Because WE need it

How so much easier life would be
If only we could faithfully choose to walk in the spirit and NOT in the flesh
