1 Samuel 16 Part 5

Verses 8 to 11 involve Samuel
Working his way through the sons of Jesse
Looking for a suitable King

And each time the Lord says, “No”

And then we come to the youngest
We come to David…

‘And Samuel said to Jesse,
“Send and bring him.
For we will not sit down till he comes here.”
So he sent and brought him in.
Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking.
 And the Lord said,
“Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!”
Then Samuel took the horn of oil
and anointed him in the midst of his brothers;
and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David
from that day forward.
So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.’
(1 Samuel 16:11 – 13)

Samuel must have been wondering
As each of the sons were presented to him
And the Lord said, “No”

Did I mishear God…?
Where did I go wrong…?
How can this be…?
Surely one of these MUST be the One…?

But NO there was another
Out in the field, keeping the sheep
The youngest one.
Only a boy, not a man yet…

How often do you and I think
That we have missed it…?
We DID hear God, but we doubt…?
It doesn’t seem to be working out…
But eventually it does

And after Samuel had done what God
Had sent him to do, he arose and left
Job done, next…

Notice that when David was anointed
The Spirit of the Lord came upon him

He was no longer just someone with a good heart
He was also someone that God was always with

When we come to faith in Jesus Christ
We receive the Holy Spirit
And our bodies become His temple
(1 Corinthians 6:19)
God is with us and we with Him, forever
